Words: Clare Ate

Clare ate
jellybeans
juicy ciphers
all bravado
surface mimicry
We stared down
expansive
mahogany
or teak
or oak
Some dead
tree
with more life
than
this
desert
conversation
Clare ate
tiny candies
tasting
of other fruits
tainted
with sweeteners
flavourings
In all manners
artificial
Clare ate
each bite
finality
Swallowing
the end
of the world
Clare drank
bitter wine
strong
red
Deep, deep red
Swilling claret
around her mouth
as blood
for moonlit
wampyr
Clare ate
Clare drank
Clare
would have
chewed
me up
and spat
me out
