I’m really pleased to share the first of my base tracks, Screen Door.
[it’s called that because the only lyric that suggested itself to me so far is “I’m a wasp on a screen door”!]By way of background, here’s a a recent Facebook* post:
So, here’s a thing… For about 4 years now (maybe more), I’ve had this set of chords that I’ve ended up playing at practice or just when setting up my rig – 3 separate sections, forming a Verse, Pre-chorus and Chorus of a never-written blues-rock song (kinda Black Crowes-ish, though not quite southern enough).
I’ve toyed with it, as you do, but everything I come close to writing for melody and lyrics sounded just too American – and I have neither the accent, nor swagger to pull it off.
Yesterday, to keep myself level during self-isolation, I got a whim to record drums, bass and primary rhythm guitar, so that I could offer the track out to others in my muso network to either a) contribute to; or b) use for whatever they want to do with it.
Did that in the afternoon, after working on other songs for the next record, and I REALLY like how it’s shaping up (think Oasis playing a Memphis honky-tonk and you’ll be close).
Thing is, as soon as the initial tracks are done, my muse kicks in, with other parts I could add, and I begin to become protective of it (as we all do about our work in genesis). Really interesting to catch myself right in the middle of that sensation.
Yet, even though I love where it could go, it remains a long way from my wheelhouse in terms of vocals and accent – so I think I’m going to go with original plan.
I’ll tighten things up later today and then post a link to mixed audio and original stems for anyone who wants to use it.
[and maybe I’ll let myself scratch that particular itch at the same time…]
Gotta love music.
