I always knew
we were fragile
pressure building
pushing us apart
until only time
lay between
where we stood together
and the cataclysm
sure to render us
separate forever
I always knew
distance rends ties
waving across miles
wishing for your eyes
until I forgot
lines around your mouth
that crinkled so
when we laughed
so hard we thought
breath lay bereft
I always knew
this road would split
high or low
left or right
mountain or plain
your feet would walk
while mine might trudge
such mountain paths
or quicksand ground
swallowing resolve
I always knew
the fissure would crack
the ice-field break
the looming void
this abyss
this chasm
this canyon
gravity sure to grab
if we either
tried to cross
From the prompt “fissure”
