I played a lovely solo set on Friday evening.
The audience was warm, attentive and in the moment with me.
During the show, I spoke of how it was the first extended set of my own music I’d played since 2018.
I spoke of how I’d burnt out at that point.
Of how I had become numb to the experience of playing live.
Of how I’d come to resent the sharing.
To resent my music.
So, Friday’s set was a true blessing – and I am full of gratitude to those who heard me.
As ever, I spent the weekend after the gig at a low ebb (I’ve come to know these cycles well…)
Several people asked me why the band (Monkey68) doesn’t play any longer.
It’s a complicated thing, but the core truth is this:
– personnel were hard to find (and keep)
– venues were few and far between
– audiences were falling
– I was burnt out on gigging my own stuff
But, more importantly, my music was (and has) morphed away from where it had been.
Giving away the idea of “how do I play this live?” allowed me to get back to playing (and playing with) music.
See Me, the first track recorded for Virus Child, came up in discussion on Friday night – so here you have it with a fresh video – which includes some thoughts that emerged while I worked on it.
While I would love to play this music out, my list above means its VERY unlikely to happen, so this video is likely the best chance of our sharing it together.
With that all said, though, I hope you take a quiet moment and enjoy this piece!
