We last laid on this spot about a year ago.
Sunny day, the grass warm beneath us.
We named the clouds; claimed them animals.
Drank the wine; ate the food.
Loved. Above all else, loved.
The ocean way below, roaring empty threats; ceaseless arguments for rocky coastline.
Tonight though, clouds scud the moon.
Playful stars demand attention.
We are silent now.
Wondering where it all went, the dreaming, the feast.
Hard to recall as the evening grows chill.
The blackness between twinkling distant suns.
Yawning dark.
Should gravity fail, we might fall forever.
This endless drop above us now.
As it was back then.
When we dined our fill.
“Fall” it said and, for sure, we did.
“I’m still falling,” I speak to the black.
“Huh?”
“Oh, nothing… Just thinking,” thankful for the clouds’ dark shadows.
A lifetime of falling since the picnic.
I bite down the bitter laugh that bubbles in my throat.
We might fall forever.
“Do you ever wonder if the sky remembers us?”
The moon breaks clear, my tears revealed.
Falling forever.
From the prompt “Do you ever wonder if the sky remembers us?”
Leave me a prompt and I’ll write you a little something 🙂
